Inside the Whale
2006
Flakturm Arenbergpark
The flak-tower for which this sitespecific piece was developed, is one out of six still remaining defence towers of the second world war. Hitler had these towers build but they never served in their original function as defence against air raids but only as a bunkers for civil and military population.
Geophones (geo-acoustic sensors) were embedded into the concrete floors and walls of the flak-tower reflecting the sounds of the tower for the duration of the exhibition.
In one room at the very center of the building all signals were merging and being replayed aloud and amplified through speakers.
Hearing the sounds, echos and vibrations of the whole tower inside this small room, the visitor gets a vague idea of what is going on simultaneously throughaut the entirety od the whole building.
The title of the work refers to the stories of Pinocchio and Jonah, who both were swallowed by a whale and had to spend days and weeks inside the huge mammal.
