Inside the Whale

Installation, Flakturm Arenbergpark, 2006

supported and sponsored by:
SENSOR, Netherlands and
University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna

Geophones were embedded into the concret floors and walls of the Flaktower to reflect the sounds of the tower during the opening of the exhibition.

One room at the very center of the building was the "control station" where all signals were merging and being replayed aloud by accoustical speakers.

The title of the work refers to the stories of Pinocchio and Jonah, who both were swallowed by a whale and had to spend days and weeks inside the huge mammal.

Staying only in one small room of the building but hearing the sounds, echos and vibrations of the whole tower, the visitor gets a vague idea of what is going on simultaneously inside the huge complex.
